The 2020 US Presidential Election
Next year the whole world will be looking forward to the United States of America presidential election. The 2020 United States presidential election has been scheduled to hold on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. This upcoming election will be the 59th quadrennial United States of America presidential election. As usual, voters will select difference presidential electors who in turn will elect or choose a new president and vice president or re-elect the current president.
Electing of a president or vice president in the 2020 US election is done through the electoral college. The series of primary elections for the president is expected to take place before June 2020. This presidential primary election or nomination process is an indirect election where a selection of a slate of delegates is made before the political party elect their presidential representative.
The political party, Republican of president Donald Trump is seeking for re-election after been elected in 2016. Whosoever that emerges the winner in the 2020 US presidential election will be inaugurated as the new president on the 20th of January, 2021.
United States presidential election
One cannot just declare himself ready to be the president of the United States of America without meeting up to certain requirements. According to article two of the United States Constitution, one is qualified to compete for the presidential post if he was natural birth in the United States of America. Also, the person must be at least 35 years old and must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years.
Every presidential candidate must be a member of a political party of the country and must have successfully emerged as the party’s nominee after their primary election. The primary election is usually carried out to select the candidate that is considered best suited to contest for the presidential position.
The primary election is an indirect election where different delegates are voted for before a particular candidate comes out victorious. It is now left for the successful nominee to select a running mate as his vice president. This is not so in the Libertarian party as they also nominate a vice president through voting despite the nominee’s choice of running mate.
Another thing to take note about the United States of America is the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states. It states that a person can’t be selected or elected to be the president after undergoing a second term. This amendment was the reason why past presidents such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama didn’t compete for the presidential position again. A former president who served for a single term has the constitutional backing to come out for 2020 election. Former president Jimmy Carter is an example who has the right to come out for the 2020 US presidential election.
Demography of the United States
About 40 per cent of people between the ages of 18 to 45 is expected to be eligible American voters in 2020 while 30 per cent that is not white is expected to be eligible to vote. From the report of bipartisan, voters demographics changes since the election in 2016 could have an impact in the 2020 election results.
Other expected increment changes in the percentage of eligible voters by 2020 are African Americans, Asians, Hispanics other ethnic minorities. While these aforementioned minorities are expected to increase, the American white citizens that have no college degree will have a reduction of eligible voters.
This change will be an advantage for the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party because of geographical differences. This has all it takes to make the incumbent United States president Donald Trump or any presidential nominee of Republican Party win the electoral college while losing the popular vote.
It is expected that Washington, D.C. may lower its voting age of eligible voters from 18 years to 16. City Councilman Charles Allen introduced legislation in April 2018, with a public hearing in the month of June, and a vote by year end. Unlike other American cities like California and Berkeley that allows citizens of 16 years to vote, this would permit citizens at 16 and 17-year olds to vote in the presidential aspirant of their choice for the first time in 2020. Charles Allen said that he got inspired when he saw high school students participating in the March for Our Lives, that took place at the capital in the month of March.
The 2020 presidential election is not the only election that is suited to take place. Other elections such as the United States Senate elections, United States House of Representatives elections, 2020 will take place the same time with the presidential election. Different states in the country will also participate in state gubernatorial and legislative elections.
Following the election, the seats will be redistributed among the 50 states in the country by the United States House. This redistribution of seats will be based on the number of citizens of American citizens in 2020.
The country’s states will conduct a state legislature districts together with a Congressional redistribution. In almost all the states, the incumbent governor and the state legislature are in charge of the redistribution. Some American states have commissions that conduct the redistricting. A political party which emerges as a winner in the presidential election usually have a coattail effect that also gives other elected representatives of that winning party the opportunity to win other positions.
This is to say that the political party that emerges the winner in the 2020 US presidential election has an advantage when it comes to the new state legislative districts and congressional drawing.
